I wonder how many languages you actually speak.. I met some americans, all of who know nothing of any language what so ever, though 2 of them claim to know Spanish. I´ve heard them speak Spanish. Not a pretty sound. One of the Americans I know is trying very hard to learn a different language, keeps bringing up te excuse he doesn´t know shit about grammar, which is true. Um. Let me break this down for you. I was commenting on how all Hollywood did to make this beautiful woman “ugly” was by slapping on some glasses, braces, and frizzing out her hair. It’s incredibly shallow. I thought, perchance, I could cleverly remark that in a sarcastic manner by making a Not Another Teen Movie reference.
I’ve seen the movie, I got the refference, my comment still stands. It’s not shallow, we are basing ourselves on a picture of a person. None of us can know anything about this person other than the direct fysical appearence we see in the picture.
If you want to go on ahead and speculate about this persons “inner beauty” based on one picture then go on ahead. It does not make the rest of the world shallow for making a statement based on a single picture. Quick, someone supply us with an objective definition of “ugly!” Then, break it down into “ugly inside” and “ugly outside.” It seems to me that most people in America, as our media has trained us to think, assume that “ugly” is “that which does not instantly give men a hard-on.” That definition speaks volumes. Some would say she isn’t ugly because you can’t see her ribs or collar bone. It seems that “beauty” is some ridiculous, dynamic and ephemeral social construct. I know what I prefer in a woman, but far be it from me to judge another ugly. I watched some other version of Ugly Betty in another language and when Betty finally got rid of the braces and glasses, she was really good looking.
She was better looking than any of the other women in the cast. I never saw an episode where, like the Hollywood version, Betty wears black latex/spandex; It would have made it obvious that Betty had the best figure.
I guess the couldn’t find someone who was really good looking and willing to look ugly on TV.

I mean she doesn’t look that bad. If she changed up her clothing and cut off some hair, she’d look great. I mean there’s a million people who look worst then her.

Falck, I have to tell you, you’ve made some very narrow-minded assumptions. First, of course we realize the world hates Americans. We’re not stupid, in fact some of the most important medical, scientific, and academic discoveries have occurred in this country. However, I would point out that not any government or political system is perfect. I also have found that in this country, my family has more education, health care, and life choice options than any other country. Canada may have free health care, however, the quality is so very low that many come to the US for treatment.
Outward appearance is a fleeting thing. At 18, you are still a boy, regardless of where you have lived or who you have done. You are not yet concerned with the woman that will have your children. Pregnancy and giving birth changes so many aspects of woman’s body. There is a reduction of muscle tone, a large amount of hair loss, changes to the skeletal structure of the pelvis, and changes in vaginal structure associated with pregnancy and delivery. A breastfeeding woman’s breast sag, and will never be the same as they were. It is a fact of life. Does it make me less attractive, sure, but at the same time I have given life to a child, and fed him the best possible food to support his healthy growth. I don’t mind that I sag and that my body will never be what it was at 18. Traditional concepts of beauty are based upon flawed thinking. Hitler was very concerned with outward appearance and managed genocide in order to achieve his mater race.
Also, you’ve mentioned several times all the languages you speak and I am very proud of you for learning so many languages. You are not the only bilingual person in the world, or even on this website. So I’d toss you a cookie, but I think that particular aspect of this post will go over your head. Living in another country with Mom and Dad does not mean you have experienced that country. If you want to claim you’ve experienced something, then I have some suggestions for you. Sit with a homeless person and ask them about their life, learn where they’d been, and where they want to be. Visit ritual events, take part with an open mind, try to understand the reasoning, the value of such things. When hearing the mythology of a group, look beyond the fantastical to what the oral history truly means to the people there. You’ll never completely understand, but it’s the attempt to understand that matters most. Look at what a group eats, how it’s prepared, where it comes from, and then try to understand how those things relate to the overall belief system of a culture.
My assumption is that you have never felt proud of any country in which you’ve lived. I am not proud of the governmental choices that have been made in American, but I am very proud of many Americans. Those that take in special needs children that in other countries would be left to rot, stuck in a crib. I’m proud of those that invited people who lost everything to Hurricane Katrina into their homes with no concern for how they would be paid back. I’m proud of those that work in soup kitchens feeding those that have no food. I’m proud of those that work their way through school so that one day they can achieve better things. I’m proud of those that sit with the dying and give them comfort. I am not a saint, but I’ve sat with the dying, I’ve helped feed the hungry, and I’ve learned the life stories of those that most of society finds a burden. This is what it means to experience and live.
You stated that you’ve come here to upset a bunch of Americans. Don’t you have something better to do with your time and energy. Instead of having sex with four different woman, regardless of how beautiful they are, would your time not be better spent in giving back to society that has given you the freedom to do so? You are allowed to have as many children as you like and know that you will be able to feed them. You are allowed to orgasm, many women are not allowed that due to female mutilation. You are permitted to travel across borders, many are not. You have no fear that your government will execute you if you return home. I am close friends with a student in the US who is to be executed if she returns to her home. Her brothers have been jailed, her mother and father interrogated with torture because she came to the US to study. Her parents married off her sisters as young as 10 in order to protect them because they disagree with the government’s choice to murder civilians. I have little money to offer her, so I’ve helped feed her so that all the money she gets can go to smuggling her family out of her home country. She’s thrilled to be in America. Why are you not giving of yourself to make the world a better place. If America is so terrible, why are you not working to correct it, instead of sleeping with multiple women, which you have judged worthy based on the fact that they are beautiful?
Your comments didn’t particularly upset me, but seeing as you’ve claimed to be experienced, I thought perhaps I would waste a few minutes letting you know how short sighted you are and how limited your view of the world is.

If you atually want to know why I in my mind justify not spending all my time helping with all the horribleness going on around us I’d love to tell you, but it wouldn’t be here. If you are only out to teach me a lesson, then the least I can do is assure you of what a great job you’ve done.

Thanks for your reply, really I wasn’t intending to be offensive or anything. I just wanted to point out that there is so much more to life than physical beauty and stereotypes. In addition, whether there is a lesson there or not is up to you. I just hated seeing the same two arguments thrown back and forth. I do believe firmly that no one has a right to complain about anything until they have worked to make the world a better place. Therefore, I don’t often complain, but want to be darn sure I’ve earned the right to do so. Too many years of listening to college students who have Mommy and Daddy footing the bill complain about an increase in this tax or that tax, which they do not have to pay. It irritates me to see someone with privilege complain without having the energy to use their resources for good. Physical beauty is truly an individual thing. Even when I was grossly pregnant, my husband still told me I was beautiful, and let me tell ya, 8.5 months of pregnancy ain’t a pretty sight. At 18 I thought I knew so very much. Then I found myself at 22 sitting in a dark, hot apartment with only two moldy crackers sitting in my cabinet and a stack of overdue bills because working 3 part time jobs while going to school full time still doesn’t seem to pay all the bills. I think more than anything, I wanted you to know that not all Americans fall into that stereotype you have for us. My years of training has taught me one important thing… There is no group of people that can be classified by a stereotype. Each culture is a group of individuals that ascribe, loosely or tightly to a system of values. Not everyone completely accepts what they have been taught to believe.

Well believe you what you will, but I do think a lot too, and if I actually believed in the fact that you actually CAN throw everyone into a steriotype, Paul Newman would be pretty hard to attone for, just as an example of someone as far off the steriotype as you can get.
External beauty is a gift, one that does not last. Having it is one thing, but taking it for granted is really being a dick about it. It’s quite funny how your opinion on a matter can change entirely based on how seriously you look at it.

Falck, all personal facts about yourself aside, are you aware that you are contradicting yourself, you make good points, yes America’s *entertainers have a distorted view of beauty, but you say it’s about someone’s opinion, but you claim that she is ugly and that’s the end of the story, you are not allowing anyone to disagree with that fact that you think she’s ugly. as you can tell from the comments, many people think she’s beautiful (on a side note, hot and beautiful are two completely different ideas in my opinion) Everyone has their own view and you need to stop saying they can have that opinion and then take it away and say they are wrong when they disagree, opinions don’t work like that

I think this is great and so true. Hollywood’s definition of “ugly”- over 120 lbs. with one exception- you’re at least 6 ft. tall. Braces? Come on! Braces make people look better- eventually. There’s no problem with them. And glasses are coming back into style. America Fererra is really pretty. Even how she’s dressed, etc. on that show doesn’t make her ugly. Forget the media!

Over all, though, its funny that I ran into this just because I was looking at the cover of a dvd box set for this series that my friend owns and I was thinking… “She’s not ugly at all…”
Even if the show is supposed to be siding with her or whatever, I think it’s really shallow to call her ugly. Glasses and braces does not mean ugly… I’ve never seen the show so I don’t know if its just because everyone in the show is shallow and calls her that or what… but yeah.
