Shouldn’t it be “it’s that dang groundhog!?”
I actually had to consult The Font of All Knowledge (a.k.a. Wikipedia) on this one.
The groundhog, or woodchuck, is a kind of gopher. So technically, it’s correct.
No it should be gopher. Now go rent caddydhack and stop making me feel old
Both apply. Now go rent Groundhog Day and stop making me feel so young and clueless! ;P
***Whoosh!**
That’s the sound of the obvious reference going over my head.
Waaaaaay back in the early 90’s, Bill Murray starred in the film “Groundhog Day,” in which a cranky journalist ends up reliving Feb. 2 over and over again.
Oh, yeah, I remember that one now. Thanks for the info.
see my post above. The gopher predated the groundhog, and was a lot funnier, and you didn’t have to suffer through watching Andie McDowell
My point is, he was in both a gopher movie (Caddyshack), and a groundhog movie (Groundhog Day). Also, a groundhog is a kind of gopher. So this LOL would be equally correct with the word “gopher” or “groundhog.”
Please remember that this younger generation is, sadly, much less acquainted with Caddyshack than with Groundhog Day. I’m trying to remind users of the one they’re more likely to remember.
…and waaay back in 1980 (right after the invention of the wheel and fire) he was in a film called Caddyshack, where he was at war with a gopher. We had to walk to the theater in those days, up hill both ways in the snow.
Oh. I neve saw Caddyshack. That explains it.
Go rent Caddyshack. Now. Seriously. Why are you still sitting there???? GO!!!!!!
And the film was silent and in black and white. But at least back then you didn’t have to take out a second mortgage for tickets, popcorn and a drink.
Yeah, it was the third mortgage on the plastic bag we lived in.
i dont get it
OMG!!! You guys are making me feel sooo old… Did none of you see Caddyshack? (with the exception of Doubts, that is)
No, it’s not that you’re old, it’s that my generation sucks, lol. I’m 22 and I’ve seen Caddyshack. It’s not even that old of a movie, and I personally think it, Animal House, The Blues Brothers, and a number of other films should be required by law, lol. People my age don’t seem to get pop culture. I made both a Rock Hudson reference and a “It’s a Wonderful Life” joke at work and no one knew what the hell I was talking about. Makes me sad people don’t know stuff.
I’m 15 and I’ve seen it.
But seriously, people. GO WATCH CADDYSHACK. YOU’RE MISSING OUT ON ALL THE FUN.
Reminds me of a story my parents used to tell about when I was 2 and my dad was still in the military. A CCR song started playing on the Muzak at the PX, and immediately, 2-year-old me loudly announces, “They’re playing Creedence Clearwater Revival!”
This was in the late 80’s. Most people our age STILL don’t know who CCR, Jim Croce, or Buffalo Springfield were, and all too many of them don’t realize that the recent films “Yours, Mine, and Ours” and “Cheaper by the Dozen” are crappy remakes of classic films by the same titles.
Also 22, have never seen Caddyshack, but I STILL lol’d at this!
Animal House+Blues Brothers= the utter awesomeness of John Belushi. I have both on DVD. They ROCK!
Caddyshack is awesome! Ted Knight is genius in that film!
kill the golfers?
What?
(
)
Correct me if I’m wrong Sally, but if I kill all the golfers they’re gonna lock me up and throw away the key.
NOT THE GOLFERS!
The kids here that have no clue!
Kill them!
My God, he’s aged horribly.
No, no, I say he looks pretty good/happy/normal compared to Vinnie Barbarino over on the other thread.
Caddyshack was probably the funniest Bill Murray ever was. Anyone ever see the dancing gopher toy you can get? I bet a lot of younger folks don’t get where that’s from.
As for gophers, around here they mostly make up road pavement. Ugh. For critters with a proto-language, they sure are stupid about roads. So any character being outwitted by one is pretty pathetic.
Well that’s great but what about Bob?
)
I pray I’m not the only one to get that joke…
Baby Steps and Death Therapy. I’ve tried both. They work well.
What about Bob? is an awesome movie. Richard Dreyfuss is also funny.
Caddyshack was probably about the funniest Bill Murray ever was. Anyone see the Dancing Gopher toy?
As for gophers, they mostly make up road pavement around here. For critters with a proto-language, they sure are stupid about roads. It makes that Murray character look even more hilariously pathetic, being outwitted by one!
(though our gophers are better known as “prairie dogs” .. .and I hate driving because of them. I don’t want to run them over (though farmers would thank you for it) but sometimes you just can’t help it when they turn around and run RIGHT UNDER YOUR WHEELS when you’re swerving (on an empty highway) to miss the buggers.
Crap. the first time I posted that, it disappeared. I post again, my first post appears. Makes one look like an ijit.
Wow. this is the best one I’ve seen in a while
Bonus points if it was meant to refrence both movies
Don’t drive angry….don’t drive angry!
So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I’m a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald… striking. So, I’m on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one – big hitter, the Lama – long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he’s gonna stiff me. And I say, “Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.” And he says, “Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.” So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.
A great scene, Selkhit…
No one mentioned Stripes!
our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts! Here's proof: his nose is cold!
…and I’ve never forgotten the spatula treatment
Oh my god. Stripes is HILARIOUS.
THAT’S THE FACT…. JACK!!!!!!
Stripes is awesome.
Not as good as caddyshack. But awesome anyhow.
Yeah, I like Caddyshack better of the two.
Maybe if Stripes had a better soundtrack?
*wanders off humming “I’m Alright”*
for all the old geezers: i think he looks like dr. breen
lol. i luv it! ^_~
haha! that movie was weird for me, because I watched it about as many times as he relived Feb 2nd during the film…
Bill Murray looks so old :’( noooooooooooooooo
lol, I remember that movie. And all of you who don’t get it, just go rent Caddyshack, and Groundhog Day and be done with it.
I think it “Is that a ghost?” would have worked as well.
Ghostbusters FTW!
I’m a youngun’ and I own the Caddyshack collection. CHEVVY CHASE OWNS!
Mahnanananana!
fantastic career he has had.
