  2. anymouse says:

EXACTLY what I thought when I saw the movie. Terrible remake, imo.

  3. BattleCry says:

I remember when sci fi was about stuff blowing up and universal messages of goodness. Not shamefully plugging the environmental left.

    • rvn says:

The original “Day the Earth Stood Still,” made in 1951, was about ending all war, nuclear war in particular. One could see that as a “universal message of goodness” or as “shamefully plugging the anti-nukes left,” which was beginning to gain followers and reached its height in the 60s.

Of course, Star Wars fits into the category of being about universal goodness and nice explosions. But as a huge fan of sci-fi books and movies, I don’t think there has ever been a time in which science fiction focused exclusively on universal messages and ignored the issues of the day. In short, I think your “remember when” never was. In reality, remember “Brave New World” and “1984,” to name the most popular? As well as “The Forever War” and a host of others.

Even if you ignore books and focus on movies and TV shows, the new “Battlestar Galactica” is more about a universal message of complexity and confusion than pure goodness, and often “plugged” issues of the day, such as torture and the effects of prolonged war on society.

Of course, you may be thinking more of the “space opera” genre of sci-fi, but even space the original Star Trek occasionally had episodes that focused on a specific issue, such as racism, rather than “universal goodness.” I certainly wouldn’t say that a sci-fi movie about environmentalism goes outside any usual or former norms for the science fiction genre as a whole.

If your point is that you disagree with the theme or message of the “Day the Earth Stood Still” remake, I can certainly respect that. But science fiction works that take a stance on social issues are certainly nothing new, and neither is it new for people to disagree with them!

I would not want to meet that guy in a dark alley *shivers*

  5. To quote, “WHOA.”

  6. Casey says:

And he’s STILL hotter than you.

  7. fangirl says:

and he will play spike spiegel *cry*

    • brak says:

That is a travesty. The man has never shown the slightest speck of humor in any of his work that I’ve seen which means a large dimension of Spike’s character (the wry humor) will not be present. I’m not usually a guy who will scream “this will suck” buuuttt………..

    • Hito says:

I don’t know whether to orgasm that it’s Keanu, to cry that it’s -Keanu-, or to cry that it’s live action.

  8. Einah says:

He was pretty funny in Thumbsucker.

  9. Hell Hath No Fury says:

We all know he wasn’t acting in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventures….that’s just how he is. To quote Hermione Granger, he has the emotional range of a teaspoon.

  10. Tessie says:

Um, OK… I, personally, would have gone with “Wooden”, but it’s all good.

  11. Fatzilla says:

Although the remake needed perhaps a -teeny- bit more action, I think he did alright. Kinda reminded me of an alien James Bond.

  12. Selkhit says:

Completely off-topic, but Greg Grunberg (that could be spelled wrong, but I don’t really care) from Heroes looks like a fat Keanu Reeves. True story.

  13. dolphin girl says:

    mmmmm yummy

  14. no-name says:

He may be wooden, and have the emotional range of a teaspoon, but people still want to see him in movies… *drools*

  15. John Warner says:

You know the question from the movie, “You’re not from this planet, are you?”
    Well…

  16. guh says:

GIVE HIM A BREAK YOU SICK PEOPLE, HIS WIFE IS DEAD.

  17. forge says:

I’d say that word is more like, “Dude.”

  18. ginner says:

    in my opinion,
    in bad taste.

i love this man, my favourite actor.
    in all my favourite films.

    and he is beautiful!

  19. Sledge2071 says:

Why did they have to pick this man to play Spike Spiegel?

    • forge says:

Because he’s the one driving the project?

It’s a bummer but at least they’re going to make the movie and at least it’s a reasonably cool guy playing the part. It could be a lot worse – but yeah, it could have been SO much better.

  20. Bgirl says:

    AMEN
I never understood why people in Hollywood still hire him.

  21. Yory says:

    Haterz…

  22. Ragnarok says:
