No… American viewers/listeners are killing music.

  2. Katy says:

There are some talented people, but it is mostly about image, of course.

  3. Czernobog says:

American Idol, paying for Simon Cowell’s fleet of compensation cars since 2002.

  4. diamondshark says:

    4th?

  5. Bix nood says:

More like garlic in the American Music Industry coffin.

  6. Killer9 says:

There is something worse than American Idol. It’s the attitude of way too many people that their taste in music is some sort of holy and divine writ, and the last word on what is good or worthy. Get over your tiny, pointless little selves, folks.

I personally don’t like American Idol, but I don’t see it as any sort of threat to “real music” (which I am assuming means “whatever the caption writer likes and absolutely nothing else in the history of the world”), and neither do I see any popint or validity in disparaging anyone who watches it.

  7. pompom says:

I couldn’t give a crap about what people think about just a dumb reality show, but Adam Lambert is an amazing singer.

  8. DeeDee says:

American Idol ranks right up there with boy bands. All flash, no substance.

  9. Nicolletta says:

I am amused at how seriously some people take one silly LOL.

  10. sarah says:

i LOVE ai if you dont like then dont watch it but i watch and i love it and there are soem really good singe4rs on there(ada, lambert, allison iraheta, kris allen)

    • RJT says:

      BGT > AI

    • IvanTheMildlyAnnoying says:

And you’re what…12? Goes to show the mentality of it’s viewers. *sigh*

And to that moron who said rock is dead…better look again. Half of the retards on Am Idol are singing rock songs. Also, every city in the country has (or can tune in to) a classic rock station. Kinda puts a stick in the spokes of your argument, don’t it?

    • Megan says:

ha! You proved it’s killing real music right there! They’re “really good singe4rs [sic]” not “really good vocalists” and definitely not “really good MUSICIANS.” Those would require singing with something other than canned pre-recorded accompaniment, where you actually have to have the musicianship to work with another real live musician. There’s a difference between good karaoke and good music.

      • ladykitteh says:

        WIN.

      • MaestroKyle says:

Too True. I’m a bassoonist in an orchestra, and I have a lot of respect for our chorus members. Singing like they do takes true talent and know-how; This B.S. about singing along with a tape like you do in 3rd grade music class is nonsense.

  11. bee says:

There are two ads for american idol merchandise on this LOLpage…
    fail.

  12. bee says:

    make that four- sorry.

  13. Amanda says:

I actually like AI, but even if I didn’t why the hell make it public to the world and possibly offend some people (Exaggerated fans of AI, the contestants on AI, the people who put most of their time to making the show happen. . . .) in the process.

  14. Jaylynne says:

I don’t like AI, but some people up there are pretty talented. And what is real music?

  15. ShadowQuest says:

Gee, and that’s why Queen offered Adam Lambert, the runner-up of this year’s Idol, a chance to be their new lead singer.

That’s why Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Hicks, Daughtrey, Kellie Pickler and Fantasia are hitting the top of their respective charts.

That’s why American Idol raised MILLIONS the past two years for charities all over the world, including several here in America.

Because it’s all fake and “killing” music.

    Uh-huh. Sure.

    • ladykitteh says:

I highly doubt their raising money for charity has anything to do with the quality of the music on AI, whether “fake” or “real”.

    • Forge says:

It is crap television and crap music and I could honestly not care a tiny bit less about what charities they give to. Or what “charts” these “people” are on the top of.

  16. Fiz says:

No, music’s well and thriving. I just wish music snobbery would go away though. I love Animal Collective. I also love the Macarena. Surely there’s no harm in that?

  17. robotbears49 says:

Well, American Idol is a ridiculous trainwreck of commercialism. But the contestants are actually very, very talented people, for the most part. It is definitely not easy to perform a song you’ve only had a week to practice, live, in front of millions of viewers. They’ve got no lip-synching, no auto-tuning, no overproduced beats. So when you do find someone even marginally talented on this show, you know they’re a thousand times better than all the Britney Spears or Lady Gagas of the world.

I would bet that whoever wrote this is a bored teenager who’s never watched the show, judging from the fact that they can’t spell. Please, know that “real music” is not the same as “music you like”. You are not the coolest person in the world, and your choice of music is not a standard of the musical world.

No one is killing music. And if someone were, it would be the arrogant losers who tell anyone else that what they like is not “real music”.

  18. DocHoneydew says:

I take great pride in never having watched more than a minute or two (and even then it was muted) while waiting for a real show that was on after American Idol.

  19. brak says:

All this is moot, simply because AI is not what ruined “real music”. The culprit, of course, is MTV. EMpTV was more responsible for taking what was once art and turning it into a widget, for making it more about image and superficial claptrap than about content. Would Milli Vanilli have been possible without eMpTV? Doubtful. Would half the shite that’s out there pretending to be music with substance exist without eMpTyV to bang it over our heads how PRETTY they are? Music is about what your EARS tell you, not your eyes. Some awfully ugly people make some awfully fine music….and some of them are even OLD!!
The shame is, it started out good. It was a chance to see artists you didn’t normally see and get a sense of what they were about (Zappa live=WIN). But the money quickly took over as soon as the fu(king suits and lawyers discovered what a valuable marketing tool
it could be and assumed control. And that, my friends, is what the M in MTV stands for. Marketing. Oh, and manufacturing.
C’mon kids….close your eyes and LISTEN.

  20. Nah. American Idol only kills music for those who use it as their main source of musical enjoyment. And those people are idiots, and they should be killed.

  21. Josey says:

Haha, the guy on the top is making the GIRUGAMESH :D

  22. Traitorfish says:

I’d say it’s having absolutely no impact on “real” music. All it does is accelerate the cycle of worthless fire-and-forget b-list pop singers. No big deal.

  23. yomomma says:

    …I like American Idol…
    But yeah, they mostly suck.

  24. Jess says:

American Idol is diminishing the respect for singers everywhere. It sends out the message that any regular jackoff who can stay on key is a musician and a learned vocalist, which is total b.s. Try actually LEARNING something about music first, assholes!

  25. alec says:

ANd to finish the job it started is joeness bros and miley ciris

  26. Lu says:

I’m always a little bit enraged by theses sort of LOL Celebs. I understand that humor is all about opinion, and some people will find this hilarious and “full of win.” Still others will argue until they’re blue in the face about how it’s totally wrong.

I just want to say that, in the end, whatever this LOL’er has made their opinion to be, we who enjoy the show (or even just some of the singers that come off of it) can keep enjoying the show for as long as it’s on. There will always be flak, but people give flak to others only to make themselves feel better.

As a musician, looking at some of the singers from American Idol, they are damn good. Adam Lambert has a range that a lot of males don’t have (as most humans are only blessed with about a two-octave range). That may not “redeem” the show in anyone’s eyes, it’s not supposed to, it’s just a fact.

Also, people have been singing songs written for them by songwriters since the beginning of music. Not all great vocalists are also songwriters, not all great songwriters are also vocalists. Just because someone doesn’t write their own music does not mean they aren’t connecting, it doesn’t mean they aren’t an artist. I don’t think Aretha Franklin wrote a lot, if any, of her own lyrics, but she’s still considered an amazing artist.

    Just my two cents.

  27. bronzechains says:

Right on, Lu. If you hate the music on the show, stop wasting time blowing the whistle on it and being a hater. Turn off the TV, and listen to whatever you do actually like.

If you like it, watch. If you hate it, don’t watch. It’s that simple. :)

    • paws4thot says:

That idea would be fine if Pap Idle and its ilk didn’t pervade the radio and Tv news and chat shows so much these days.

  28. Anelise says:

Actually it is NOT fake. They sing real music, and introduces the younger generation to michael jackson, the beatles, motown etc. And I bet the top 13 of any year can outsing 90% of today’s chart toppers. HA

  29. aly1243 says:

adam and allison are my 2 favs!

  30. megg says:

    ONLY since 2002?

  31. Rosalie Hale says:

i can’t believe they fired paula!!!! she was like 40% of the show

  32. Jenna says:

    Love that picture.

  33. nutella says:

I think the op is giving AI a bit too much credit. As I see it, American Idol is just a reflection of the music industry today. In reality its the consumer that is ruining music as they are the ones that watch and buy crap. If they didn’t, AI would’ve never gotten off the ground.

  34. Sassy says:

I’ve hated american idol in principal since day one, but i must say Adam Lambert was the first one who impressed me, when he sang/performed i was in awe
