:/ he wasn’t gay in any of those roles

  2. azz says:

    Second !

  3. Debra says:

Does anyone know the titles of any of those movies? I thought I’d seen everything he was in, but I don’t recall any of these roles. I’d love to see it, though.

    • Ib says:

Charlie and the Chocolate factory, Upcoming Alice in wonderland, and Pirates of the Caribbean… and NO he wasnt portraying someone gay in any of those roles… i am happy that being eccentric has been coined as being homosexual

      • Czernobog says:

Of course not! He was an oenophile in “pirates” a pedophile in “Charlie” and almost certainly a zoophile in “Alice”!

Honestly, Depp is a decent actor, but something has turned him into a phenomenon, and it’s not his acting.

        • paws4thot says:

I thought he was a rum drinker?

          • Naoyusimi says:

Besides the rum-loving, he had a big errrm, crush for Elizabeth . . . he may have played Capt. Jack a little on the swishy side, but he definitely had a sexual preference in that movie, and it wasn’t Will he was after!

          • woodsrider says:

the rum is gone. why is the rum always gone?

            • ThePretzleStand says:

The bum is gone… Why is the bum always gone…

He didnt say that, so he was certianly not a gay pirate. Willy Wonka was gay. JUST LOOK AT HIS FUCKING NAME!

        • sevenmarie says:

except willy wonka hated kids so i dont think he would want to boink any of them!

      • paws4thot says:

        Thanks for that.

I’m pretty sure Jack Sparrow was straight; he got into waaay too much trouble with ladies of negotiable affections to be gay!

Willie Wonka I’m not sure about either way, beyond that the way Johnny played the role made me slightly uncomfortable somehow when he was on screen.

I’ve no views about his portrayal of the Mad Hatter, cos I’ve not seen the film.

As for talent though, can I enter Edward Scissorhands, Donnie Brasco, Ed Wood, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico into evidence if we’re prosecuting him for “having more acting talent than is entirely lawful”?

      • Serenstar says:

Gay does have another meaning beyond ‘homosexual’ so how about we consider that? We’ve turned the English language upside down, assuming the slang use of a word is the actual meaning.

        –adjective
        1. having or showing a merry, lively mood: gay spirits; gay music.
        2. bright or showy: gay colors; gay ornaments.
        3. given to or abounding in social or other pleasures: a gay social season.
        4. licentious; dissipated; wanton: The baron is a gay old rogue with an eye for the ladies.

As we can see, he does rather fit that definition in all of those rolls in one way or another.

    • Hannah says:

How could you think you’ve seen everything he’s in if you haven’t seen Pirates of the Caribbean..
      like seriously, wtf.

    • MWahatten says:

Posters above me catching the sarcasm, fail.

  4. DShide says:

I agree. The maker of this must just be jealous. Seeing as women love Johhny in those roles. Or he is a self loathing homophobe take your pick.

  5. Cenovit@ says:

Nope, not gay… who vote for this?

  6. Meg says:

Ummm…in Pirates of the Caribbean it clearly shows Jack Sparrow as being something of a womanizer. Not so much “gay.” In the other roles, the characters’ sexuality is never even hinted at-since they are both movies based on classic CHILDREN’S books. I’m thinkin the creator of this LOL (which didn’t make me LOL) has some serious sexyness envy!

  7. piratemomma says:

let’s not forget that this man also played a gangster, a mentally handicapped man, another menatlly handicapped man with a physical handicap as well, a psychotic writer and an undercover cop. He’s amazing.

  8. Danbala says:

The captioner must refer to “gay” as in happy. (Since John Dillinger did not seem to be a Happy Bunny.)

  9. Anathema says:

Gay? Excuse me? What fool wrote this caption?

Jack was about as straight as any man can get. Wonka was a child trapped in a man’s body thus did not understand nor was he comfortable around anything adult. And commenting on the Mad Hatter already? Twit.

    • eeeeeeeeee says:

“Wonka was a child trapped in a man’s body thus did not understand nor was he comfortable around anything adult.”

As another commentor (or two or three) noted, when I watched Depp’s portrayal of Wonka, I was practically beaten over the head with a “Hey! He reminds me of Michael Jackson!” stick. I wondered, and still do, if it was a deliberate choice on Depp’s part to play the Wonka character so eerily reminiscent of Jackson – for exactly the reason you mentioned in the excerpt above; to get people to see what “a child trapped in a man’s body” etc would look like.

In the controlled environment of a movie script, those characteristics and mannerisms were definitely peculiar and at some points (IMO) creepy, but easily understood as a result of Wonka’s twisted relationship with his father and his (financial) ability to isolate and indulge himself in a fairy-tale existence.

In real life, where the other “characters” don’t have to follow a pre-set feel-good script and people can feel threatened or uncomfortable because this is a real person and not an on-screen character, those same characteristics and mannerisms, built on the same foundations, played out as sinister and predatory.

You KNOW that, if Wonka were a real person, people would have been screaming “child molester” and “insane freak” and “twisted pervert”… and that the Augustuses and Violets and Mikes would, before too long, have started coming forward with tell-all books and accusations. But, when you can portray Wonka simply as he is, without wild-cards and people acting out their own agendas, it’s very easy to see and understand him exactly as you said – “child trapped in a man’s body, uncomfortable around anything adult.”

  10. Jekka says:

    BOOO BAD CAPSHUN!!!

  11. HelOnWheels says:

    Yeah, COMPLETE CAPTION FAIL!!

  12. ThinklePeep says:

His Willy Wonka was disturbing. It was on the other night and I couldn’t even be in the same room when my fam was watching.

    • MWahatten says:

Willy Wonka was meant to be disturbing. Roald Dahl’s description is just that. Disturbing. Re-read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and you’ll understand.

Besides, it’s Tim Burton!:) I do believe his middle initial is ‘D’ for…=)

  13. brunetterebel says:

While Willy Wonka was a bit disturbing, I think Johnny Depp is quite talented. Even more so because he plays eccentric/creepy roles so well. He has done a wide range of films and done very well in many of them.
I believe this caption has Johnny Depp envy at it’s root

  14. laura says:

I’m really mad at this. Depp is by far my favorite actor and he wasn’t gay in any of those movies. Whoever made this is obviously jealous of Depp’s career and is gay themselves!

    • Gary says:

Gay isn’t an insult you know. And he won’t sleep with you even if the straightest man in the universe!

  15. zaxxonq says:

Caption fail! >_< Not gay, just odd, kooky, eccentric, wacky, or, yes, even queer, but NOT gay! Dipshit.

  16. BMW says:

Well, in all the roles I’ve seen Johnny Depp in:

    - Edward Scissorhands (Edward Scissorhands)
    - Dean Corso (The Ninth Gate) [my personal fave]
    - James Barrie (Finding Neverland)
    - Rochester (The Libertine)
    - Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Carribean)
    - Sweeney Todd (Sweeney Todd)

I haven’t seen any gay tendencies. Now, when I saw the trailer for Willy Wonka, my first thought was “Michael Jackson,” but I have never thought the character was gay.

  17. ld says:

Send this caption over to failblog.

  18. dd cooper says:

This is a fail all around. It’s just a matter of opening a damn book and reading to know that John Dillinger was bisexual.
    Do your research. LOL responsibly.

  19. Tbagger says:

Seriously? You may be the worst judge of homosexuality I have ever encountered. You should seriously consider investing in a GayDar.

  20. TiChan says:

First of all, not gay in those movies. Second of all, Johnny Depp has played in so many movies and so many diverse roles he could be cast as nearly anything.

    • Shushnik says:

Diverse roles? Creepy/excentric candymaker. Creepy excentric hatmaker. Creepy/excentric pirate. Creepy/excentric detective. Creepy/excentric freak with scissors for hands. Creepy/excentric mass murderer.

He’s not bad, but he’s mostly got one character he keeps playing over and over and over. Diverse isn’t exactly his thing.

      • Naoyusimi says:

Oh. My. God. You spelled “eccentric” wrong six times, and it’s spelled right above at least once. Dang.

I probably would’ve skipped playing the role of spelling cop today, but I heartily disagree with your “one character” B.S. — they might have been all eccentric, but they were not all the same. And those are far from ALL of his roles. What you’re probably seeing is that he manages to add his own little unique twist to each new character he plays.

      • lolMiel says:

Again, that’s only a small segment of his roles. Chocolat? Finding Neverland? The Libertine? He’s been in 49 movies with 14 more coming up; you listed almost all the ones in which he played someone eccentric.

        • Shushnik says:

All the eccentric characters? Not hardly.

Chocolat…Roux the Irish gypsy rover. Not creepy, but definately eccentric. Sam from Benny and Joon. Cry baby. Gilbert Grape. Ed Wood. Damn near every major part this guy plays is steeped in the same character. Even the semi-normal characters are quirky and eccentric personalities, and he seems to be distancing himself from somewhat realistic characters as his career progresses. He’s a fair actor, but there’s more alike about his characters than there are differences. He has yet to prove he has range.

And yes, my spelling isn’t the best. Congrats Naoyusimi.

          • Naoyusimi says:

Could give you the point that he *has* played a lot of eccentric characters; however, I choked when I got to this point: “He’s a fair actor, but there’s more alike about his characters than there are differences. He has yet to prove he has range.”

“… Fair”?? “… more alike about” those characters? “… yet to prove he has range”??!

Do we inhabit the same reality?

            Seriously.

Some posters listing his other movies forgot to mention: “Blow” & Jim Jarmusch’s “Dead Man”.

          • DShide says:

Well if you remember Nick of Time he played a quite normal father, or rear window he was a pretty normal writer, John Tutoro was the eccentric character in that movie. I know there are more I just can’t think of them now.

          • Mad Maudlin Hart says:

Roux isn’t that eccentric. He likes hot chocolate!

      • paws4thot says:

Isn’t that one of those irregular verbs: You know:-
        I am idiosynchratic
        You are eccentric
He is 3 cans short of a 6-pack.

      • Zoreta says:

What about Gilbert Grape? How is he creepy and eccentric there?

Or when he voiced Victor Van Dort- normal person thrown in to abnormal world.

He puts his own quirks in to every character- every character needs quirks for them to be believable. Having quirks does not make a character creepy/eccentric- it makes them human.

  21. faile says:

I think the captioner doesn’t have any sense of sexuality beyond the absolute shallow. Depp was not wearing a football jersey spending every other line of dialogue saying how he wants to bang women, therefore he is gay. That’s it. it doesn’t matter if as a lead character his role should be visually striking and interesting to the audience with at least some depth, because being interesting is gay.

  22. Andrea says:

Worst caption ever. You should be ashamed.

  23. antisean says:

yeah, i have to weigh in, too, and say that as a gay man, i get sick of people associating femininity of a character with obligate homosexuality, as if the two go hand-in-hand. i find it uneducated and offensive.

    • Naoyusimi says:

True! Capt. Jack made some hand gestures which seemed a little … oh, less masculine, perhaps, and ran funny (even when sober) …. that does not mean “gay”. Geeez.

  24. felicia says:

    nope not gay….. fail

  25. canadajane says:

Since when is gay an insult or a bad thing or a sign of bad acting? Okay, since every bigot declared open season on anyone who is different. I agree with everyone who finds this caption offensive (as well as annoying). Can’t “bigdog1862″ (now THAT’s a revealing alias) and others like him get over their prejudices and join the real world? And meanwhile, can’t the administrator of this site recognise a homophobic and inappropriate caption and not perpetuate the insult? Please, let’s grow up here.

  26. Alice says:

Really, ROFLrazzi? This deserves the front page?

    • eeeeeeeeee says:

Got us commenting, didn’t it? Which = page views which = ad revenue/brand recognition. I think they know what they’re about here.

  27. timn says:

fuk u to who ever made the caption and for who put it up

  28. Death by Taco says:

A gay Mad Hatter? What idiot wrote this caption? Alice in Wonderland hasn’t even released a trailer yet, but you’re calling the Mad Hatter gay just because he’s played by Johnny Depp? This caption sucks. And Johnny Depp has had many Dillinger-esque roles. He didn’t only play humorous/borderline insane and silly characters. Anyone remember Sweeney Todd?

    • HelOnWheels says:

“He didn’t only play humorous/borderline insane and silly characters.”

Exactly. Thank you for pointing that out. Nor has he only played “eccentric” characters, like Shushnik believes. The Libertine, The Man Who Cried, Blow, among others – not silly or eccentric characters.

      • Death by Taco says:

But if a movie’s main plot-line isn’t about sex, the main character is gay, according to the shallow and idiotic percent of the population [which is approximately 90%, by the way]. Oh, and if the movies are more mainstream and are bigger news, they’re obviously the only movies the actors have ever been in. The older movies that created less hype never existed to that 90%.

    • michael9 says:

Actually, Sweeney Todd was quite insane. You do have a point, but you used a bad example. I know he’s played fairly ordinary people before, but I can’t remember what movies off the top of my head now.

      • Death by Taco says:

George Jung? Not eccentric or insane.

      • Death by Taco says:

What I meant with Sweeney Todd is that he wasn’t silly, like Willy Wonka or Jack Sparrow. He was, in fact, quite serious about his profession.

      • DShide says:

Donnie Brasco, Blow, Nick of Time, Platoon, Nightmare on Elm Street, hell what about 21 Jump Street, Private Resort, also Don Juan may have been eccentric but hes was not gay.

    • lowly grunt says:

I saw a picture of Depp as the Mad Hatter and he looks like a psychedelic Elijah Wood. It was really odd.

      • Death by Taco says:

I have seen those pictures as well. And the fact of the matter is that the way he looked wasn’t because the Mad Hatter was gay, it’s because he’s an Alice and Wonderland character. They’re supposed to look bizarre.

      • wvgirl says:

HA! I thought he looked like Elijah, too!

  29. michael9 says:

He never played a gay pirate or gay mad hatter. Gay candy maker? Arguable.

  30. Death by Taco says:

The thing that angers me most is the fact that they say “gay Mad Hatter”. Alice in Wonderland hasn’t even released a trailer yet!

  31. REJ says:

whoever captioned this should just die….
and noone, and i mean NOONE takes the piss out of the upcoming Alice in Wonderland film, i have never been so excited about a film in my life!!!
    twat…

  32. minty says:

whatever! johnny depp is best…..besides, wasn’t gay pirate or candymaker, was inebriated pirate and a childlike candy maker… pfffttt

  33. Vr says:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Whoever made this caption needs to stop being jealous of awesomeness.

  34. wvgirl says:

    What a fail.

  35. Leigh Nichols says:

    Whayat tha heeelll??
    Epic fail!

  36. Christina says:

Wait, the mad hatter is a Burton film. What wouldn’t Johnny Depp and Burton’s wife be it?

  37. Rogahar says:

I think the word they were looking for was either “Flamboyant” or “Camp”. Personally I found his acting in WWatCF hilarious, I loved his portrayal of the character when things went potentially disastrously wrong.
“…oh. o.o Well, that was unexpected. Oh well, on we go! =D”

  38. gobo says:

How did this shitty caption even get put up? It is crap. Zero unicorns for you.

  39. Erica says:

Nope, just heaps of irrational fangirl lovin.

    • paws4thot says:

They say there’s a first time for eveveything; well, they’re right. This is the first time I’ve ever been called a “fangirl” (well wrong on the second count). ;)

  40. TaylorMaid says:

what’s up with the bigotry in the last two captions? massive fail

  41. asdf says:

    homophobic much?

  42. relbabydoll says:

Wow! I absolutely enjoyed reading all these comments and thorough exams by everyone lol, funny stuff! But, “seriously”, it’s a joke, and I happen to love Johnny Depp, can’t wait to see him as a hard-ass gangster I have to admit. Sexy!

  43. bigdog1862 says:

Good freakin Lord people. Just because your grasp of the English language does not exceed that of slang words, don’t go spreading your stupidity over this site. I have seen all the movies listed with the obvious exception of Alice in Wonderland and Johnny Depp tends to go toward very flamboyant roles. I did not think Sparrow was actually gay. I did not think Willie Wonka was gay. I seriously doubt the Mad Hatter is gay. If you morons would learn more than slang, you might actually make yourselves better.

  44. Sud_Vicious says:

    Spot on.

  45. ParadoxInPlaid says:

Really? “Gay” ??? what, are we in 7th grade? Caption FAIL.

  46. hesgay says:

    get over it

  47. nicole says:

he wasn’t gay in any of those roles

  48. mjc says:

    Better caption:

    “TALENT

    This man has none.”

  49. atownspider says:

he wasn’t gay ur prolly just a fat ugly old jealous bastard lmfao at u, kuddos something made me laff, hint it wasn’t your lol

  50. DonnyDooDoo says:

Well, Dillinger WAS a Homosexual. He had a lover in prison or something.

  51. ewfgtwefg says:

Jack Sparrow isn’t gay! He is awesome!

  52. L3r0yJ3nk1ns says:

Jack had plenty of salty sea wenches; Wonka appears to me to be just generally uninterested in sex- not women- as does the mad hatter. They are all just… flamboyant. which makes them thoroughly enjoyable[:

  53. nataliejo says:

I’m thinking that this was meant as saying that the other characters were acceptable and Dillinger was a bad ass. But the hatter in question……
He is a “mad” hatter after all, not a “gay” mad hatter. The character only needs one title, and not an incorrect one. I’ve loved AIW since i was a child so bludgeoning it with this not so terrific caption, offends me.

  54. sarah says:

he was NOT gay in any of those movies. and captain jack sparrow especially because did you see that he liked the GIRLS?

  55. lily says:

    ???????

  56. Stass says:

His pirate act was pretty much the opposite of gay. And I think you’re forgetting his role in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Blow, in which he played drug addicts, in Secret Window where he played a murderer, and in From Hell where he played a cop. You don’t really know what you’re talking about, and this poster is a complete FAIL in my opinion. Next time you want to make a cheap shot, I suggest you go for Miley Cyrus, she’s a lot easier to pick on.

  57. Sam says:

So i do think you must be a homo, not that there is anything wrong with it but if i were a guy i think i would want to accuse someone as sexy as Johnny depp of being gay so i could have pitiful wishes of one day brushing his hair.. so stop trying to be funny

  58. Forestwater says:

Uh . . . am I the only one who thought this was funny? I mean, I love Johnny Depp and all, and I don’t think any of those roles were “gay”, but everyone’s so serious about it and getting way more upset than it seems to warrant. It’s just a joke!

  59. RayneJade says:

not only did he land the role, but he nailed it too. Johnny Depp is the awesome no matter what character he’s playing 8-)

  60. EmeryB says:

You forgot he also was “Edward Scissorhands” :-)

  61. Anonymous says:

Seriously, do some research before you post something on here. Otherwise, you KNOW you’re gonna get jumped by Johnny Depp fans. And by the way, Willy Wonka was litterally gay; he was HAPPY, unlike you.

  62. Consuela says:

Arguably, Johnny Depp is one of the greatest actors on screen at the moment. His talent is amazing and aside from Will Smith, he is my favorite. Not only is he an amazing actor but he is so down to earth and every time a fan asks for an autograph, he gives it. Awesome actor and awesome man.

  63. Jenna says:

Can’t wait to see the new Alice in Wonderland movie.

  64. FerrisWheelJunkie says:

I know this post is old hat-but just had to say Im shocked that in the listings of kick ass Depp movies, that Blow has not been mentioned. His role as George Jung was mindblowing. You cant tell if he’s a bad guy or good guy. He’s a guy who gets sucked into the money of swnging drugs to doing it to support his family and it goes too far. If you havent seen it-do! It’ll blow your mind. Also, HELLO?????? Fear and Loathing, anyone????

    • FerrisWheelJunkie says:

I take that back-As Im re-skim the replies-I do see Blow and FLLV listed. So sorry…but my views of them kicking ass still stand ;)

  65. hyperxscenexkidxonxacid says:

Well, first of all being gay isn’t bad, and second he was not gay in those movies.

  66. mazder360 says:

okay, Willy was kinda gay, but Jack and the Hatter are AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  67. Katy T says:

Johnny Depp rocks, those characters aren’t gay man.

  68. Linda says:

Nobody has mentioned “The Brave”, a film he directed and in which he played an indian husband and father. Unfortunately, it was never released in the US, even after winning an award at the Cannes Festival, and is not generally available.
