    Will Smith isn’t a “great actor” …..

  2. MeMongo says:

So if “most of [the great actors] started out as a tree, a sunflower of a donkey’s behind in a crappy school play”, how did Will Smith get his start? Oh, right, he started in crappy rap videos.

  3. arimareiji says:

Does that mean Kanye West is going to become a great actor some day? He does a great impression of being a horse’s ass.

  4. Lili says:

Will Smith definitely is a good actor, if not truly “great” – his comic timing is excellent, his delivery is sharp, and hey, he’s a fine-looking young man (ha ha! He’s my age). “Great” I reserve for those who have several decades and a lot of stage behind them, but he’s definitely good.

Now, that doesn’t say that he’s always picked the best options for himself, artistically; but I certainly don’t mind paying to watch him run and jump around and fight bad guys :)

  5. UGH says:

    Will Smith is garbage

  6. Mycroft says:

Will Smith is in a vicious circle:
At first, people loved him, which made a lot of people hate him because they believe people loved him for no good reason, which made even other people love him, because they don’t see what the second people’s problem is, and think Will Smith must really be a great actor because of all the fuss people make about it.

Truth is, Will Smith can be “great”, but it depends on your definition of great. He’s not Al Pacino “Great”, but he’s certainly above the likes of say, Dwayne Johnson, Keanu Reeves and Harvey Keitel.

    • paws4thot says:

      Even that’s arguable:-
Dwayne J’s not even good, but knows his limitations.
Keanu R isn’t great either, but can “open” a film.
Will S, ok he can open a film for some people, but not for me, and I’m not convinced he knows his limitations.

    • arimareiji says:

he’s certainly above the likes of say, Dwayne Johnson, Keanu Reeves and Harvey Keitel.

Not that familiar with the other two, but “above the likes of… Keanu Reeves” is what used to be called “damning with faint praise.” I.e. “Yeah, John is a quick, sharp thinker – definitely smarter than that guy down the street who’s been huffing paint for the last ten years.”

Keanu’s talent is very similar to that of Nicholas Cage, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, or any of their other tri/mono-syllabic brethren: Eye candy, typically with only one stock facial expression.

    • Gustav says:

I’m sorry, did you say he’s above the likes of Harvey Keitel?!?

      You = acting judge fail.

  7. wtf says:

You guys saying will Smith isn’t a a great actor have been hittin’ the pipe a bit too hard. Have you seen I AM LEGEND… he plays this role very straight laced, and if you didn’t feel sorrow when he was talking to the manequine in the video store after his dog died, then you either don’t know great acting when you see it or you’re not human. Maybe both. Yes, a lot of his roles are light, but he has serious dramatic chops when required. Pursuit of Happyness was another movie where he showed his great acting chops.

    • Brandon_ha says:

I will agree with you on POH, it was a good movie, however it wasn’t a great film. A great actor is someone who has been in the business for decades upon decades and has proven themselves to be in the top of the acting world through their filmography. Will Smith will never be a great actor, but he will be a very good actor, and that is something few people will ever be.

    • Fgsfgd says:

Are you seriously defending Smith’s acting skills with THAT movie, that piece of crap that ashamed anyone who had read the brilliant book it was supposed to be based upon?
I’ll consider Smith a decent actor after I see a movie in which he has no shower scene, meanwhile, he’s just a hyped piece of meat.
I’ll grant 7 Pounds was good and he was slightly above his average on it. Thank the gods there was no car chase on that one.

      • Basara says:

Hate to break it to you, but I AM LEGEND was based more on the previous movies that were derived from the book, than the book itself – and still managed to be closer to the book than the other attempts.

Smith’s movie would have never been made without Vincent Price & Charlton Heston doing REALLY bad adaptations of the book before – hell, no one would even remember the book, these days, without those movies.

Will Smith is one of the greatest actors of our era. The problem is, this era in filmmaking is really poor in comparison to times long past in the film industry – It’s not hard to be one of the greats in your time, if your competition is the likes of Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves, etc.

And (in response to an earlier post), Ari, as for Nicholas Cage, do you feel that way because he’s a mere actor willing to play roles that are interesting but not deep thought provoking? One of the reasons he chose the path in acting that he did was because if he played more serious roles, people would constantly be comparing him to his director uncle – there’s a reason why he changed his last name, for acting.

  8. sara says:

Will Smith has been nominated for two Oscars and is one of the highest box office grossing actors ever. Greatness has nothing to do with time span, he has had great success in a very short time span. How can you say he will “never be” a great actor, oh wait your are right he already IS one.

  9. will smith is as good an actor as there is out there working these days.

  10. T says:

    AW HELL NAW

  11. Kaeli says:

In my opinion, Smith did (other than the rap start) the same thing Hanks did: built up on a familiar foundation.

Yes, in most of his movies, he played Will Smith, but he did a good job at playing Will Smith. He was funny, personable, and enjoyable to watch.

Lately, he’s expanding into non-Will Smith roles. It took him a bit to get the hang of playing someone else, but he’s doing quite well at it now.

Is he a great actor? Who am I to judge? I never even played a flower. I will pay to see him, though. I’ll enjoy his movies, and think that it’s nice to see an actor grow enough to play differing roles. I’ll have 2 hours of nice for my money, and it’s not addictive, dangerous, or illegal.

Will Smith is fine by me.

  12. Lilybean says:

I think he’s a great actor. Range is just one aspect, but what he lacks in that he makes up for in convincing emotion and likeability.

In my opinion. Just watch certain Fresh Prince episodes…

  13. Lessing says:

You guys are seriously deaf and blind. Will Smith? Just because he has had financial success doesn’t mean he’s a great actor. Keeanu Reeves has made millions, and he’s crap at acting. Will Smith has no aspirations. He plays in dumb Hollywood Feel Good movies, and the few “serious” movies he was in were mediocre, see I Am Legend or I, Robot. Both were big disappointments.

If you want to see a great actor, watch the early Nicholson, or the early de Niro. Will Smith? He’s at the same level as the movies he’s in, and that’s no compliment. He’s no better actor than (the equally medicore) Ben Affleck or Tom Cruise.

    • cjwhatever says:

Smith is way better than Affleck. Ben Affleck can’t act to save his life. And Tom Cruise – that crazy dude is more concerned about being filmed looking “taller” than his acting (dis)ability
Will Smith has range. He can do funny, he can do serious, he can do sad. He can make you feel what the character is feeling. That’s acting.
