No they aren’t. They’re mellow from eating all that eucalyptus.

They rarely bite but they will scratch you pretty deep if they feel cornered.
That doesn’t make them mean. They are mellow unless, as you say, they feel threatened.
I think it’s more like they’re preserving energy, not “being mellow.” They have to eat a lot every day to get their nutrition, and it makes no sense to expend any more energy than necessary when it’s so hard to acquire.
