Great man, Not since Jaques Cousteau did one man do so much for people knowing about the world around us.
I hadn’t thought of the comparison to Cousteau before, but you’re right. He’s always been one of my heroes too. Nicely said!

Stupid stingray.
Saw a commentary cartoon on deviantart right after he was killed. A little chibi Steve was holding an upset stingray and saying “It’s alright, mate” . Made me blubber like a baby. He probably would have said that, too. Dang, misting up here again. I miss that crazy SOB
The man annoyed me on occasion, but he did a lot of good work, and he is indeed missed.

Steve Irwin did a lot of great stuff but you got to say that you knew that it was going to happen someday. Also that he actually could have lived if he didn`t pull the stinger out. Btw lots of people here in Australia hate his daughter. She is so annoying!

The Prague Zoo decided to acquire a breeding pair of Australian Salt Water Crocodiles, so they sent one of their Herpetologists to acquire them.
First message: ARRIVED AUSTRALIA SAFELY
The next day: APPOINTMENT WITH STEVE IRWIN
The day after that: STEVE & I GOING ON EXP.
Then, no message for a couple of weeks. There arrived a shipment from Australia Zoo–two Salt Water Crocs, a breeding pair. Taped to one of them was an envelope of Australia Zoo stationery. They opened the envelope and read, in Steve Irwin’s hand:
THE CZECH IS IN THE MALE.

The baby / croc thing was a media beat up – The croc was some distance from the baby, only due to foreshortening of the camera view did it look like he was being reckless
He was a genuine person, with amazing enthusiasm and without artifice – which is why he became famous
(I remember Jay Leno reminiscing about the end of his first interview with Steve. When the cameras were off and Steve Irwin still acted like a kid on caffeine at Christmas Jay realised “My God, this isn’t an act, he really is like that”) – the world needs more people like him

I only-half agree with you, Steve Irwin was an amazing person but that was just wrong, dangling his child in front of a crocodile. Btw I`m Australian and the Australian media made a big hoo-hah about it.
I’m suprised no one has brought up the fact that after his death there were numerous sting rays killed and mutilated. Steve would have been utterly horrified. I loved him, he was a wonderful man. Bless him.

You can’t blame the sting ray, it is a wild animal, all wild animals are unpredictable. No matter how good you are, you don’t KNOW what they are really going to do next. And, I think Steve knew that.

Why do you have such a problem with the fact that “being a celebrity” /= “being universally popular”, and that some of the people who didn’t like a particular celebrity see no reason to be hypocritical just because they died?
I could not possibly care less about celebrity or popularity… Really… The fact that lots of people just loved Steve Irwin has no bearing what so ever on the fact that I liked and respected him…
Feel free to dislike who ever you want… but as I stated already… my issue is the way some people seem to celebrate the death of a person who tried to do something good.
There is a difference between “I don’t like him” and “Oh Yeah!!! I am so glad he’s dead!”… or “His death is so funny…”

my brother used to work with him many many many many years ago when they where young for the national parks and wildlife service…my brother said he was like a ADD monkey on crack back then to ….his death hit my brother hard
Until he died, every Aussie I spoke to was horribly embarrassed by the man, and cringed over the image he presented to the world. After he died, he was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Well, his daughter is embarassing! My family used to live in Japan and when we went there, all our American friends asked us if we knew about him, we were like “Who?”. No-one in Australia really knew about him until a few years ago. Also he was one of those things that you are embarrassed about sometimes but you were really proud of it too.
